In Pakistan a bomb attack targeting an aide of the prime minister killed 5 people in the Swat Valley. The official escaped unharmed. Hours later gunmen fatally shot Mian Mohammad Mushtaq, an anti-Taliban politician, along with two aides on the outskirts of Peshawar. Private guards working for the lawmaker, Abdul Rehman Khetran, attacked police at a checkpoint, beat them up and stole their weapons. Police then raided the lawmaker's fortified home in Baluchistan province and found a private dungeon at his home in which five people were found chained up. Khetran is a legislator for Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, a conservative, religious party.

Activists said the al Qaeda-linked Islamist State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has executed dozens of rival Islamists over the last two days as the group recaptured most territory it had lost in Raqqa province.

He was currently working for security firm Garda World. Menard had resigned from the military after pleading guilty in 2011 to having an affair with a female corporal under his command.

Suspect Valery Permyakov, a Russian soldier who deserted his unit at a Russian military base, was detained the next day while trying to cross from Armenia into Turkey. On Jan 19 a six-month-old boy became the 7th member the Avetisyan family to die. On August 23, 2016, a Russian military court sentenced Permyakov to life in prison.
