In the Netherlands five sperm whales beached on Texel Island. All 5 died before anyone could attempt a rescue operation. Sperm whales began to wash up on German, Dutch, French and British shores. Over the next two months 29 beached whales surprised scientists after only 82 previous beaching of sperm whales had been documented since the 1990s. In 2017 German scientists said the mass beachings could have been due to solar storms.

Finger prints soon identified the bomber as Saudi-born Syrian Nabil Fadli. An 11th German victim died of wounds on Jan 26.
