In South Korea some 274 people were missing after the sinking of the Sewol passenger ferry in the Yellow Sea. It carried 475 passengers and crew, mostly high school students from Danwon High School in Ansan, on an overnight trip to Jeju island. Only 174 were rescued. On July 18 the confirmed death toll was 294 with 10 still missing. A body recovered on Oct 28 raised the toll to 295.

In Ukraine a column of 6 armored vehicles flying Russian flags drove into Slovyansk, a city controlled by pro-Russian insurgents. Ukraine's defense ministry said pro-Russia separatists had seized the six armored personnel carriers from Ukrainian armed forces with the help of Russian agents. Ukraine's security service said it had intercepted communications showing that Russian commanders in the separatist east had issued pro-Kremlin militants with "shoot-to-kill" orders.

British prosecutors said they will not charge former lawmaker Greville Janner (86) with alleged sex crimes due to his severe dementia. More than a dozen people had accused Janner of abusing them in the 1960s-1980s. Janner died on Dec 19, days after a court ruled him unfit because of ill health to stand trial.

Russian masked police raided the Moscow offices of a civil society organization funded by former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky. The Vatican unexpectedly ended its controversial takeover of the main umbrella group of US nuns. A six-year row between activist American nuns (LCWR) and Vatican officials, who had branded them radical feminists, ended with the nuns conceding to demands that they keep within the doctrine of the Roman Catholic church. The umbrella group “Leadership Conference of Women Religious” represented 80 percent of US nuns.

Mali's special forces arrested Alou Doumbia (32), the suspected "Number Two" of a group of Islamists accused of carrying out an attack last month on Ivory Coast's Grand Bassam resort that left 19 dead. The brains of the operation, Kounta Dallah, was still at large, and is suspected of both organizing and taking part in the attack, as well as appointing Doumbia to his role.

In Papua New Guinea Matthew Damaru, the head of the police anti-corruption unit, was sacked after arresting several high-profile figures close to the government. Officers from his unit last week arrested the attorney general and a Supreme Court judge on charges of corruption. A lawyer working for PM Peter O'Neill was also arrested on charges of perverting the course of justice.
