A Somali official said foreign naval forces in international waters off Somalia's coast shot dead two pirates and wounded another when the bandits attempted to hijack a ship. Six other pirates survived the attack and escaped. Residents found two dead bodies left by the pirates near the coast.

Turkey held a bitterly-contested referendum on whether to give Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expanded powers. Final results later showed 51.41 percent of voters had backed the referendum with an 87.45% turnout.
