NYC authorities said an investigation of a pair of drug traffickers has resulted in a record seizure of more than 150 pounds of heroin from Mexico worth at least $50 million. Agents over the weekend arrested Jose Mercedes and Yenci Cruz Francisco, both of the Bronx, and recovered $2 million in cash.

US federal officials alleged that a Tennessee man and his family used much of the $187 million it collected for cancer patients to buy themselves cars, gym memberships, luxury cruise vacation, college tuition and employment at six figure salaries for family members. The FCC and Tennessee said James T. Reynolds Sr., his ex-wife and son riased the money through various their charities.

In Iraq local officials said about 500 people were killed in the fighting for Ramadi in recent days. The International Organization for Migration said 40,000 people had been forced to flee Ramadi in the past four days. A Ramadi restaurant owner said the Islamic State found 30 women and 71 men in a detention center. They had been shot in the feet to prevent them escaping when their captors fled. Iraqi forces and allied Sunni tribesmen repelled an Islamic State attack overnight on Khaldiya, a town west of Baghdad between Fallujah and Ramadi.

Ukraine showed off two purported Russian soldiers it captured during a gun battle with separatist fighters in the industrial east of the war-wrecked state. Ukraine's media said Captain Yevgeny Yerofeyev and Sargent Aleksander Aleksandrov were both contract soldiers who had joined the army's main intelligence branch.

Yemeni political factions voiced support for Saudi-led forces fighting Iran-backed rebels, calling for safe zones allowing the exiled government to resume its duties. The UN said that some 1,850 people had been killed and more than 500,000 displaced as a result of the conflict raging in Yemen since late March.

Egyptian security police killed engineering student Islam Ateto. A preliminary forensic report later showed Ateto died from five gunshot wounds. Security officials insisted Ateto was an Islamic militant belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group and was wanted over the killing of a police officer last month.

An EgyptAir Airbus 320 jet carrying 66 passengers and crew from Paris to Cairo disappeared from radar over the Mediterranean south of Greece. Athens said the plane swerved in mid-air before plunging from cruising height and vanishing. Greek officials soon reported pieces of plastic and two life vests found floating some 230 miles south of Crete. On Dec 15 Egypt’s government reported that traces of explosives have been found on some of the victims of an EgyptAir flight.

In Afghanistan 8 policemen were killed by a colleague who turned his gun on them at a checkpoint in Qalat, Zabul province. In the Dihrawud district of Uruzgan province, two policemen were killed by a colleague in an apparent personal dispute. A senior officer of the Afghan army's 205 Corps, Gen. Abdul Basir Sheerwand, was killed when a roadside bomb exploded in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province.
