Missouri police responded about an hour after midnight to reports of four or five men with shotguns and wearing ski masks. They encountered multiple suspects running, one of whom pulled a gun on an officer, who shot and critically wounded the man in Ferguson near the site of protests over the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

In Iraq thousands more Yazidis poured across a bridge into camps in the autonomous Kurdish region after trekking from Mount Sinjar, most with nothing but the clothes they wore. A US assessment team found the humanitarian situation for the Yazidis on Mount Sinjar not as grave as expected. Roughly 4,500 people remained atop Sinjar Mountain. Nearly half were herders who lived there before the siege and have no interest in being evacuated.

A Russian convoy of nearly 300 trucks, carrying what Russia says is humanitarian aid for victims of fighting in eastern Ukraine, moved slowly towards the border despite concerns by Kiev and the West over the shipment. The UN said the death toll in fighting in eastern Ukraine had doubled in the last two weeks to over 2,000. Ukraine said it could allow Russian aid to enter the country after it was inspected by Ukrainian border guards and foreign monitors.

In eastern Ukraine 12 nationalist fighters, battling a pro-Russian insurgency, were killed early today and an unknown number taken captive when rebels ambushed their bus. More than 100 Russian soldiers were killed near the town of Snizhnye, Donetsk Province, while helping pro-Russian separatists fight Ukrainian troops.

In central Libya at least 17 people were killed in heavy clashes between Islamic State fighters and a rival Islamist group in the Islamic State-held city of Sirte. Earlier this week a Salafist Muslim group and armed residents attacked IS fighters in Sirte. Residents said around 15 local fighters and two IS commanders were killed.
