In Northern Ireland Kevin McGuigan, a former Irish Republican Army militant, was killed in East Belfast. The murder was widely seen as score-settling within paramilitary ranks and revived fears that the IRA is still operating in secret.

In NYC Imam Maulama Akonjee (55) and friend Thara Uddin (64) were shot and killed as they left afternoon prayers at the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque in Queens. Police the next day released a sketch of the suspect: a dark-haired, bearded man wearing glasses and soon arrested Oscar Morel (35), a Brooklyn man, following a hit and run near the crime scene. On August 15 Morel was charged with two counts of murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Milwaukee police shot and killed Sylville Smith (23) after he failed to drop a gun. An angry crowd of at least 200 people took to the streets, torching at least six businesses, including a gas station and auto parts store. Looting continued into the next night as police in riot gear moved in on the Sherman Park neighborhood. On Dec 15 police Officer Dominique Heaggan-Brown, who is also black, was charged with murder.

In Afghanistan at least 9 policemen were killed late today in Taliban attacks on checkpoints in the northern Afghan province of Baghlan, while another two were killed in the east. 5 insurgents were killed and three wounded in the ensuing gun battles.

In northern Syria US-backed forces seized full control of Manbij near the Turkish border after the last remaining Islamic State fighters, who had been using civilians as human shields, left. Clashes and airstrikes continued across Aleppo province, resulting in at least 49 civilian deaths. Within ten days of the liberation of Manbij booby traps and mines planted by retreating jihadists killed 29 people.

Kuwait said it will finish cleaning up a crude oil spill in its southern waters near the Ras al-Zour area this week. The spill began days ago and activists informed authorities about it on August 10. Kuwaiti media quoted local oil experts as saying the spill originated from an old 50-km (31-mile) pipeline from Al-Khafji. On August 16 an analysis of satellite imagery by a US-based nonprofit organization suggested at least 34,000 gallons of oil have leaked out during a spill off the coast of Kuwait.

The gunmen were from the GNA-linked Tripoli Revolutionary Brigade, a militia of former rebels from the NATO-backed 2011 uprising that led to the overthrow and killing of longtime dictator Moamer Kadhafi.
