An underwater volcano off Tonga erupted, triggering a tsunami warning for several South Pacific island nations. Tsunami waves were observed in Tonga's capital and the capital of American Samoa. The uninhabited volcanic island of Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai all but disappeared following the blast. The outlying islands of Nomuka, Mango and Fonoifua were hit with 49-foot-high waves and few homes remained standing. This was the most powerful volcanic blast on Earth in more than 30 years. Tonga's sole optic-fiber link to the internet and the rest of the world was severed by the eruption. A shockwave traveling at the speed of sound took about 36 hours to circumnavigate the globe three times, spreading out in concentric rings from the volcano. Its plume that soared higher into Earth's atmosphere than any other on record - about 35 miles (57 km). Links: Volcano, Internet, Disaster, Tonga, Amer. Samoa |
