1886
 The Clunies-Ross family was granted the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean, about 2,700 kilometres (1,680 miles) northwest of Perth, by Queen Victoria. Captain John Clunies-Ross, a Scottish trader, had landed there in 1825.
