Joseph M. Juran (b.1904), pioneer of quality control, died. Juran’s 80-20 rule states that that 80% of a firms problems stem from 20% of causes. He called this his Pareto principle, after Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923), an Italian economist who noted that 20% of the population owned 80% of the property in Italy. Juran’s “Quality and Control Handbook” (1951) made his reputation. In 2004 he authored his memoir “Architect of Quality.”
