In Israel Yehiya Farhan and a 16-year-old girlfriend lured Dana Bennett (18) into their vehicle. Farhan beat her to death and concealed the body in the northern hills. Months earlier the couple had picked up Czech hitch hiker Sylvia Molrova (27), killed her and dumped her body in a remote spot. In 2009 Israeli detectives arrested Farhan. He was already in custody on suspicion of raping an Australian tourist when a tip led homicide detectives to him. In 2010 Farhan (34) was sentenced to 102 years in prison. Farhan's female accomplice helped police with their investigation and was sentenced to a shorter prison term in a plea bargain.

Israel killed Ismail Abu Shanab, a senior Hamas political leader, in a missile strike, retaliating for a suicide bombing of a bus in which 20 people died including six children. Abu Shanab was widely regarded as a moderate in the group, and served as a liaison with Abbas during the prime minister's efforts to persuade Hamas to halt attacks. Palestinian militants abandoned a two-month-old truce after Israel killed the Hamas leader.

In Haifa, Israel, Hanadi Taysser Darajat (29), a female Palestinian lawyer, blew herself up in a crowded Mediterranean beach restaurant, killing 21 people including 4 children. A brother and cousin, Jihad terrorists, had been killed in June. Her suicide inspired a piece of installation art in 2004 at the Stockholm Museum titled "Snow White and the Madness of Truth."
