1917 Jul
Mustard agent was first used effectively in World War I by the German army against British and Canadian soldiers near Ypres, Belgium, and later also against the French Second Army. Mustard agent was possibly developed as early as 1822 by César-Mansuète Despretz (1798–1863). Prussian chemist Fritz Haber pioneered the battlefield use of mustard gas.

Soviet scientist Vladimir Uglev first synthesized A-234, an odorless liquid deadlier than any other chemical weapons that existed at the time. A-234 is from a class of nerve agents known as "Novichok".

2012 Jul 23
The Syrian regime threatened to use its chemical and biological weapons in case of a foreign attack, in its first ever acknowledgement that it possesses weapons of mass destruction. The Arab League offered Syrian President Bashar Assad and his family a "safe exit" if he steps down. EU foreign ministers began talks in Brussels with an agreement to freeze the assets of 26 Syrians and three firms close to the Assad regime in the 17th round of sanctions since protests erupted last year.

2017 Apr 4
A suspected Syrian government chemical attack killed 87 people, including 20 children the town of town of Khan Sheikhun, Idlib province. A Syrian military source denied the army had used any such weapons. 92 people were later identified as victims of exposure to sarin. The UN later said the Syria government had used nerve agents in four chemical weapons attacks since December.

In Afghanistan an attack on a tunnel complex in eastern Nangarhar province with the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat by the US military left at least 36 Islamic State militants dead and no civilian casualties. The bomb, known officially as a GBU-43B, or massive ordnance air blast weapon, unleashed 11 tons of explosives. Afghan authorities soon raised the number of fatalities to 94 Islamic State fighters dead.

UN-mandated investigators said that Syrian President Bashar Assad's air force conducted a sarin-gas attack last April 4 that killed at least 83 civilians and sparked a retaliatory US strike. Investigators said government forces have used chemical weapons more than two dozen times during Syria's civil war, including the deadly attack on Khan Sheikhoun.

It was reported that an examination by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) found that samples from an attack by Syrian forces last March 30 on the opposition-held town of Latamneh tested positive for the banned nerve agent sarin.

Director-General Fernando Arias of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), based in the Netherlands, said traces of what could be a byproduct of a nerve agent or poison gas were found late last year at Syria's Scientific Studies and Research Center in Barzah.

The global chemical weapons watchdog (OPCW) said that two investigations into alleged attacks in Syria in 2016 and 2018 couldn't establish that chemicals were used as weapons in attacks in Saraqib in the Idlib region on Aug. 1, 2016, and in Aleppo on Nov. 24, 2018.
