2013 Jun 10
Operation Lionfish, which targeted the maritime trafficking of drugs and illicit firearms by organized crime groups across Central America and the Caribbean, ended. It began on May 27 and yielded the arrest of 142 people and seizure of 15 vessels as well as guns, cash, and eight metric tons of chemical precursors. More than 30 countries and territories were involved in the operation, led by Interpol and supported by Europol.

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb told Franc Info that at least eight people died and another 23 were injured when Hurricane Irma walloped the French Caribbean island territories of St. Martin and St. Barthelemy.

The World Health Organization said Hurricane Irma has left about 17,000 people in desperate need of shelter and has devastated hospitals and health clinics across the eastern Caribbean islands. At least 43 were left dead in the Caribbean and at least 11 in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
