The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a Russian and Chinese-led bloc of Asian states, said it plans to set up an expert group to boost computer security and help guard against threats to their regimes from the Internet. SCO members (China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) are mostly authoritarian states that maintain tight controls on communications technology, including the Internet.

The Shanghai Co-operation Organization (SCO) opened its 14th annual summit. The 2-day meeting in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, included the groups six member countries: China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The SCO agreed to adopt procedures for expansion with India and Pakistan likely to join next year.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed close ties between the two nations during their meeting on the sidelines of a summit of an alliance dominated by Moscow and Beijing. The leaders are attending a two-day summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which also includes India, Pakistan and several ex-Soviet Central Asian nations.

The fate of Afghanistan dominated a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, formed 20 years ago as a talking shop for Russia, China and ex-Soviet central Asian states, but which has lately expanded into a bloc with wider regional ambitions. India and Pakistan joined in 2017, and Iran joined today. Members called on the United States to engage with the Taliban and fund aid to Afghanistan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with China’s leader Xi Jinping in their first face-to-face meeting since the war. Putin said he understood that Xi Jinping had questions and concerns about the situation in Ukraine but praised China's leader for what he said was a "balanced" position on the conflict.

Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin and Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Samarkand. Putin said that pipeline gas supplies to Pakistan were possible and part of the infrastructure was already in place.

In Uzbekistan Chinese President Xi Jinping called on Russia and other members of a regional grouping to support each other in preventing foreign powers from instigating "color revolutions" - popular uprisings that have shaken former Communist nations - in their countries. Leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) agreed to take steps to increase the use of national currencies in trade between their countries.
