1848 Jan |
James Lick (1796-1877) arrived in San Francisco with some $30,000 in Peruvian gold and 600 pounds (275 kg) of chocolate. The chocolate sold out quickly and Lick convinced his friend and neighbor in Peru, the confectioner Domingo Ghirardelli, to move to San Francisco, where he founded the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. Lick’s small fortune came from making and selling pianos in Latin America. Lick quickly began buying property in San Francisco and made a fortune following the discovery of gold in the state. In San Francisco a woolen mill was built on the block bounded by Beach, Polk, Larkin and North Point streets. In the 1890s it was taken over by the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company.
