1976 Feb 19
Rick Stevens, former lead vocalist of the Tower of Power, was arrested in San Jose, Ca., for his roll in a triple slaying after a drug deal went awry. Stevens was later convicted of murder and sentenced to death. In 2012 he was paroled by Gov. Jerry Brown after 36 years in prison.

1990 Apr
In California Glenn Payne was arrested in San Jose after a 2-year-old, who lived across the street, was asleep on a walkway a block away with her cloths torn and covered with debris. She told police a man who lived nearby had hurt her. In 1991 Payne was sentenced to 27 years in prison, but maintained his innocence. He was released in 2005 after more than 13 years in prison. In 2017 a hair analyst recanted his testimony against Payne saying it was based on an unreliable study. On Jan. 26, 2018, Payne’s conviction was overturned, and his criminal record was cleared.

2014 Jan 3
In San Jose, Ca., police Officer Dondi West shot Vietnamese immigrant Hung Lam in the back as Lam allegedly walked backward on his front lawn with a knife in her direction. Lam was left paralyzed and restricted to a wheel chair. In 2017 a federal appeals court said San Jose must pay Lam, a mentally disturbed man, $11.3 million.

2015 Oct 18
In California the Mariscos San Juan No. 3 restaurant in downtown San Jose closed following reports of an outbreak of bacterial illness due to shigella. By Oct 23 some 141 people were reported sickened from the extremely contagious pathogen.

2016 Apr 23
In San Jose, Ca., Shamina Rabbi (57) and her husband Golam Rabbi (59) were shot to death at their home at 3006 Lucas Court. Police soon arrested their sons, ages 22 and 17, as suspects. Hasib Golamrabbi said his younger brother Omar was not involved. In 2018 Hasib was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder.

2017 Sep 2
San Francisco’s record heat wave continued for a 2nd day with temperatures reaching 102 degrees. Oakland hit a record of 101 degrees and San Jose hit a record at 107. Eleven high temperature records were broken across the Bay Area. Six deaths were later attributed to the heat wave, three in SF, and three in San Mateo County.

The Catholic Diocese of San Jose, Ca., released the names of 15 clergy members who were known by the church to be child sex abusers. At least nine priests on the list are dead.
