The indigenous Sami people of Europe's Arctic north, formerly nomadic reindeer herders in Lapland, celebrated their national day with hundreds of events across the Nordic lands. The UN Human Rights Committee ruled that Finland has breached the political rights of its Sami population, charging that Helsinki had violated the indigenous people's right to "internal self-determination." Sweden's supreme court ruled in favor of Sami control of hunting and fishing permits citing government records going back to the 16th century which recognized Sami rights in exchange for taxes (paid in fur).
