Chinese health authorities said they are investigating 27 cases of viral pneumonia in the central city of Wuhan, after rumors on social media suggested the outbreak could be linked to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The disease later identified as COVID-19 was first reported by Chinese authorities to the WHO, and was not previously believed to have spread to Europe until January. The Huanan market was shuttered overnight after four cases of a mystery pneumonia were linked to the market. By the end of January, Wuhan had gone into a 76-day lockdown. In 2021 a World Health Organization-led team of experts investigating the origins of COVID-19 visited Huanan market. (See Covid-19.)
