1992
In East Timor Rev. Richard Daschbach, a Catholic missionary, started the Topu Honis shelter. He later told visitors about defending the women and children living there and surrounding areas, sheltering them in a cave, and leading a ragtag group armed with spears to stave off attackers. In 2018 he was defrocked for sexual abuse.

A former Australian spy was convicted over his unconfirmed role as a whistleblower who revealed an espionage operation against the government of East Timor in 2004. The Canberra court registry listed him as “Witness K”.

2022 Mar 19
East Timor held its fifth presidential election. Independence leader and Nobel laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta, and incumbent leader Francisco Guterres have emerged as the early frontrunners in the presidential election. If no candidate wins an outright majority, the vote will proceed to a run-off on April 19 between the top two contenders.

East Timor, also known as Timor Leste, held the second and final round of its presidential election. Nobel laureate Jose Ramos-Horta faced incumbent leader Francisco "Lu Olo" Guterres. Frontrunner Ramos-Horta secured a decisive election win 62.09% of the vote.

East Timorese independence figure and Nobel laureate Jose Ramos-Horta was inaugurated as the country's fifth president, pledging to dedicate his time in office to strengthen national unity and forge closer relations with China.
