The group of territorial islands in the West Indies in association with the United Kingdom. The original members included Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and adjacent islands. All the member islands became independent except Anguilla. It was reported that Nevis planned to withdraw from St. Kitts if 2/3 of the voters approved a midyear referendum. The 9,000 citizens of Nevis lived on 36 square miles, while the 35,000 people of St. Kitts lived on 65 square miles.
