1981
The group of territorial islands in the West Indies in association with the United Kingdom. The original members included Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and adjacent islands. All the member islands became independent except Anguilla.

1974
Peter Bird and Derek King rowed 4,300 miles for 106 days east-to-west across the Atlantic from Gibraltar to the Caribbean island of Santa Lucia. They wrote of their trip in: "Small Boat Against the Sea." In 1996 he was lost at sea during an attempted crossing of the Pacific.

Sir Arthur Lewis (1915-1991), an economist from St. Lucia, shared the Nobel Prize in Economics with Theodore Schultz (1902-1998).

Arthur Lewis (b.1915), Saint Lucian economist, died in Barbados. According to Lewis, developing countries' industrial wages begin to rise quickly at the point when the supply of surplus labor from the countryside tapers off. The “Lewis turning point,” named after him, gained wide circulation in the context of economic development in China. His work included “The Theory of Economic Growth” (1955) in which he sought to “provide an appropriate framework for studying economic development.

Derek Walcott (1930-2013), West Indies born poet (Saint Lucia), was named winner of the Nobel Prize in literature. In 1997 his collection of poems "The Bounty" was published. In 2014 an anthology of his poetry was published.

It was reported that Japan was paying 5 Caribbean nations extensive aid and investment in order to gain support to block protections for endangered species. Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent, St. Lucia and Dominica were all reported to have been bribed.

In St. Lucia machete wielding men stormed the Castries Cathedral, hacked at worshipers and set them ablaze. One nun was killed and 12 people injured. Two suspects identified themselves as Rastafarian foes of corruption in the Catholic Church.

Hurricane Ivan made a direct hit on Grenada, killing at least three people. The most powerful storm to hit the Caribbean in 10 years also damaged homes in Barbados, St. Lucia and St. Vincent, just days after Hurricane Frances rampaged through.

Hurricane Dean tore through the eastern Caribbean islands of St. Lucia and Martinique, ripping roofs from buildings, downing trees and knocking out power. 100 mph winds ruined the entire banana harvest on St. Lucia and Martinique and battered the banana industry in Dominica.

The European Union put 17 non-EU countries on a blacklist of those it deems guilty of unfairly offering tax avoidance schemes. They Included: American Samoa, Bahrain, Barbados, Grenada, Guam, South Korea, Macau, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Namibia, Palau, Panama, St. Lucia, Samoa, Trinidad & Tobago, Tunisia and United Arab Emirates. Over 40 more were put on a "grey list" to be monitored until they are fully committed to reforms.

A ship with 300 passengers left St. Lucia late today after spending two days under quarantine. Authorities there said the ship's doctor requested 100 vaccines after a female crew member was diagnosed with measles. The 440-foot Freewinds ship is reportedly owned by the Church of Scientology.
