1648
The island of St. Martin in the Lesser Antilles was divided between the French and Dutch. The southern half went to the Dutch as Sint Maarten, while the northern half, Saint Martin, became part of the French department of Guadeloupe. Legend has it that a Dutchman and a Frenchman stood back to back at the center of the island and paced of their shares. The Dutchman stopped often to drink beer and was left with the smaller share.

1981
The group of territorial islands in the West Indies in association with the United Kingdom. The original members included Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and adjacent islands. All the member islands became independent except Anguilla.

In Anguilla locals burned down Government House and declared their independence from St. Kitts & Nevis. Britain sent 300 troops followed by police to quell the rebellion.

St. Kitts and Nevis became a single nation, but Nevis retained the right to secede. St Kitts and Nevis declared independence from the UK.

In St. Kitts the government of Denzil Douglas began extradition charges against Charles "Little Nut" Miller, who was wanted in Florida for conspiring to smuggle cocaine.

It was reported that Japan was paying 5 Caribbean nations extensive aid and investment in order to gain support to block protections for endangered species. Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent, St. Lucia and Dominica were all reported to have been bribed.

On St. Kitts island Leyoca Browne (20) and her mother, Violet (36), were murdered by Bertil Fox, a former Mr. Universe bodybuilder. He was found guilty and sentenced to death on 5/23/98.

1998 Jan 16
It was reported that Nevis planned to withdraw from St. Kitts if 2/3 of the voters approved a midyear referendum. The 9,000 citizens of Nevis lived on 36 square miles, while the 35,000 people of St. Kitts lived on 65 square miles. Nevisians were particularly upset about drug barons on St. Kitts, especially Charles "Little Nut" Miller.

Hurricane Georges caused 602 deaths in the Caribbean and four in the United States. The storm hit the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Antigua, Guadeloupe, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla and British and U.S. Virgin Islands before striking Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida.

Hurricane Georges charged toward Florida Keys. The death toll from Hurricane Georges reached 443. The Dominican Republic toll was later set at 265; 172 in Haiti; 6 in Cuba; 11 in Puerto Rico; 2 in Antigua; 4 in St. Kitts and Nevis and 1 in the Bahamas.

An Air Caraibes Twin Otter plane with mostly French tourists from St. Maarten crashed on the Caribbean island of St. Barthelemy and killed all 19 aboard and one person in the house.

Cuba and Jamaica had previously signed. Chavez urged Caribbean governments to consider Cuba-style socialism as an alternative to capitalism.

St. Kitts and Nevis, staged its first hanging in a decade. Charles Elroy Laplace, condemned in 2006 for killing his wife in a knife attack, was hanged as a small crowd held a vigil outside the brick prison walls in Basseterre.
