1988 Sep 12
Hurricane Gilbert, called the storm of the century, smashed into the Gulf coast. It slammed into Jamaica with torrential rains and winds of 145 mph, killing 45 people and causing damage estimated at up to $1 billion. It also devastated the Yucatan peninsula and left 225 people dead. The storm hit the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba, Cayman Islands and Mexico before striking Texas.

In Argentina Alfredo Yabran sold his main businesses to a Cayman Islands-based holding company known as EXXEL for $600 million. He was believed to be the head of a powerful mafia empire. Former US ambassador Terence Todman was a representative of the EXXEL group. Todman was US secretary of Latin American Affairs in 1990 and called off the US Drug Enforcement Agency from pressuring Yabran, whose operations included airport customs operations, duty-free shops, cargo transportation and armored car services.

The Cayman Islands banned fishing in grouper spawning areas for eight years, citing a sharp decline in the species' population. The ban took effect of Dec 29.

Hurricane Ivan skirted Grand Cayman with winds near 155 mph as it churned toward Cuba. The storm has been blamed for 56 deaths across the Caribbean so far, including 34 in Grenada and 11 in Jamaica.

2006 Nov
Thousands of tiny parasitic wasps were released in the Cayman Islands to combat an island-hopping insect that has destroyed crops throughout the Caribbean. Mealybugs have destroyed millions of dollars in crops and ornamental plants across the Caribbean since they were first reported in the Western Hemisphere, in Grenada in 1994. They reached the US Virgin Islands in 1997, and Puerto Rico a year later.

The Norma CDO 1 Ltd. was established as a company in the Cayman Islands with N.I.R. Group LLC of NYC as its manager. The company packaged derivatives linked to triple-B rated mortgage securities In March 2007 Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings gave Norma their seal of approval and Merrill Lynch sold Norma to investors. By October much of Norma dropped to junk status as the US mortgage market declined.

British author Dick Francis (b.1920), a former jockey whose thrillers rode high in best-selling lists for decades, died at his Caribbean home in Grand Cayman. His first book was a 1957 autobiography titled “The sport of Queens.” His first novel, “Dead Cert,” came out in 1962 and was followed by 41 more.
