The Trump administration detailed a new program for providing an HIV prevention drug for free to people who need the protection but have no insurance to pay for it. Gilead Sciences had announced in May that it would donate to the government enough supplies to protect up to 200,000 people a year over the next 11 years (See AIDS).

2020 Nov 9
A new study found that a shot of cabotegravir, an experimental medicine, given every two months works better than daily pills to help keep women from contracting HIV from an infected sex partner. The drug was being developed by ViiV Healthcare, Pfizer Inc and Shionogi Limited.

Scientists announced that woman of mixed race appears to be the third person ever to be cured of H.I.V., using a new transplant method involving umbilical cord blood that opens up the possibility of curing more people of diverse racial backgrounds than was previously possible. The woman, who also had leukemia, received cord blood to treat her cancer.

The WHO said The Tigray region of Ethiopia has been sealed off from the outside world for about 500 days with no food aid delivered since the middle of December. There was no treatment for about 40,000 people with HIV in the region.
