In El Salvador a 7.6 earthquake hit near San Salvador and at least 79 people were known killed. Some 1200 people were not accounted for in the buried Las Colinas neighborhood. The "slab earthquake" originated 24-36 miles below the surface. The earthquake death toll later climbed to over 707 an damages were estimated at $1 billion.

In El Salvador a 6.6 earthquake killed at least 127 people. It was centered between San Vicente and San Salvador. The death toll soon rose to 402 with 2432 injured. It struck one month to the day after another quake killed more than 800 people.

In China an explosion at an elementary school in Jiangxi province left 37 stu-dents and 4 teachers dead. 42 people, mostly students, were killed in a schoolhouse explosion in southern China; parents said the students had been forced to make fireworks by school offi-cials. Teachers, to enhance their meager salaries, had forced students to make firecrackers during their lunch breaks. Prime Minister Zhu Rongji said the blast was caused by a "deranged suicide bomber."

In Nigeria explosions at the Ikeja military base rocked Lagos. Over 1,000 people died when they fled the area and drowned in Oke Afa drainage canal. Deaths from panic later rose to 600 and then 1,000-2,000.

Over 800 passengers and crew were believed to have perished when the Senegal’s crowded MS Joola, a state-run ferry, heaved to its side shortly before midnight in a fierce storm off the coast of Gambia. The toll was later raised to 1,863 dead. The ship had been pushed into service while still needing vital repairs. The ferry was licensed to carry 550 people but had 1,927 passengers on board, of whom only 64 survived.

In Morocco a fire erupted at an overcrowded Sidi Moussa jail in coastal El Jadida, killing 50 inmates and injuring dozens of other people. Authorities blamed electrical short circuit for Morocco's worst prison fire.

Space shuttle Columbia broke apart in flames over Texas, killing all 7 astronauts just 16 minutes before they were supposed to glide to ground in Florida. The astronauts included Michael P. Anderson (b.1959), David M. Brown (b.1956), Laurel Clark (b.1962), Kalpana Chawla (b.1962), Rick Husband (b.1957), William C. McCool (b.1961) and Ilan Ramon (b.1954). An explosion in the wheel well under the left wing was later suspected as the cause.

In Daegu, South Korea, a fire raged through two packed subway trains after a man lit a container of flammable liquid and tossed it, killing 196 people and injuring 145. In August the perpetrator was sentenced to life in prison.

The owners of The Station nightclub in West Warwick, R.I., where 100 people perished in a fast-moving fire the night before, denied giving the rock band Great White permission to use fireworks blamed for setting off the blaze, although the band's singer insisted the use of pyrotechnics had been approved.

A prison riot in northern Honduras left 86 prisoners dead and dozens more injured at the 1,600-inmate El Porvenir prison outside of La Ceiba. Soldiers and police searched for escaped inmates. Honduras' 26 prisons were built to house 5,500 inmates but are crammed with 13,000 prisoners. In 2008 a court sentenced 22 soldiers and police to a combined 740 years in prison for the massacre. In 2008 a Honduran court sentenced Dimas Antonio Benitez, a former prison official, to 1,051 years in jail for the deaths in the prison massacre.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake rumbled through southeastern Turkey. 177 people were killed and 390 injured including 80 students were trapped in the debris of their school dormitory in Bingol.

2003 May 14
In Texas Victoria County Sheriff's deputies found 17 people dead in and around a tractor-trailer rig at a South Texas truck stop. Another died at hospital. The victims were illegal immigrants. In 2006 a Texas jury convicted 3 US citizens for the suffocation of 19 smuggled immigrants in an airtight truck. In 2007 truck driver Tyrone Williams (36) was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the smuggling. In 2008 the last of 14 people indicted in the smuggling pleaded guilty. In 2010 Octavio Torres-Ortega was sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in the smuggling operation. In 2011 Williams was resentenced to nearly 34 years after a federal appeals court overturned the multiple life sentences he had received.

In Santa Monica, Ca., 10 people were killed and over 70 injured when a car driven by George Russell Weller (87) plowed through a crowded street market in an apparent accident. In 2006 a jury convicted Weller on 10 counts of felony manslaughter. He was sentenced to 5 years probation due to his failing health.
