The British Reform Act received royal assent and became law. The act, pressed through by PM Earl Grey, forestalled a revolution by increasing the number of people who were eligible to vote. The bergamot-flavored Earl Grey tea was later named after the PM.

1845 Jul 17
Earl Grey (b.1764), former British prime minister (1830-1834), died. A member of the Whig Party, he backed significant reform of the British government and was among the primary architects of the Reform Act of 1832. In addition to his political achievements, Earl Grey famously gives his name to an aromatic blend of tea.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (b.1868), Scottish architect and designer, died. He designed the walls of Kate Cranston’s first tea rooms in Glasgow (1903). His watercolors included "The Rock" (1927).

A new study reported that tea boosts the body's defenses against infections. L-theonine in black tea is broken down in the liver to ethylamine, a molecule that primes the response of the immune system.

British and Spanish scientists reported that they have discovered how green tea helps to prevent certain types of cancer. They showed that a compound called EGCG in green tea prevents cancer cells from growing by binding to a specific enzyme.
