A Nigerian government spokesman said a Dubai court found cause to honor an extradition request for former Delta state Gov. James Ibori, a prominent politician in the ruling People's Democratic Party. Authorities have said Ibori faces charges over stealing $292 million in state funds while in office.

A Dubai court sentenced Mark Arnold (42), a Briton, charged with killing Kelly Winter, his South African ex-lover, to life in prison. Winter (36) disappeared in August 2008 following a quarrel with Arnold. Prosecutors charged him with clubbing her to death with a baseball bat and dumping her body with weights in the sea. Her body was never found. Life in prison equals 25 years in the United Arab Emirates.

2010 Dec 22
A Dubai court slashed the prison terms for two men convicted in the 2009 slaying of a former Chechen warlord from life to just three years in a surprise ruling that highlighted the international intrigue surrounding the case. The family of the slain Chechen strongman, Sulim Yamadayev, had submitted a letter disavowing any desire for further punishments in connection with the killing.

In Dubai convicted killer Rashid Rabee al-Rashidi, a 30-year-old boat captain, was put to death by a firing squad in the first execution in the United Arab Emirates in three years. The execution followed his conviction for raping and killing a boy (4) in a mosque bathroom in November 2009.

Dubai police said the Gulf emirate has seized thousands of small arms being smuggled in a sea cargo shipment bound for Yemen. The weapons were discovered in a Dubai warehouse about two weeks ago. The shipment originated in Turkey.

Ahmad Rezaei, the son of prominent Iranian conservative Mohsen Rezaei, died in Dubai's Gloria Hotel in an apparent suicide. Prior to his return to Iran in 2005, Ahmad Rezaei had lived in the United States and openly criticized Tehran's rulers. His father had run against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009.

In Jordan Vivian Salameh (45) a Christian woman, said she is suing her Gulf Arab employer for arbitrary dismissal after she refused a new dress code forcing her to cover her head. She had worked at Jordan's Industrial Development Bank for 25 years when it was acquired in 2010 by the Jordan Dubai Islamic Bank, an offshoot of the Dubai Islamic Bank.

In Dubai Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and his counterpart Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo of Somaliland agreed to boost cooperation between their different factions. The two men signed the "Dubai Charter" in the presence of the leaders of Puntland and Galmudug, two self-proclaimed autonomous regions in Somalia.

A Dubai court ordered the release on bail of Ohio-raised Zack Shahin (52), who was in jail on fraud charges and has been on a hunger strike since May 14. Shahin, at the time managing director of property developer Deyaar, was arrested in 2008 and charged the following year with embezzling more than 98 million dirhams (then $27 million). Shahin was released on July 12, but was soon caught fleeing the country.

US Navy gunners aboard the USNS Rappahannock, a refueling ship, opened fire on a small boat racing toward them in broad daylight near the Gulf city of Dubai. One Indian was killed in the incident, and three of his countrymen were seriously wounded. An Indian fisherman aboard the boat told officials the crew received no warning before being fired upon. In 2013 a Navy investigation said the sailors acted within rules of engagement.

Abdallah Kombo, the director of the Zanzibar Maritime Authority (ZMA), said it was "cheated" by its Dubai-based agent Philtex Corporation, which is alleged to have reflagged the Iranian vessels. Maritime Transport Minister Rashid Suleiman Seif said The government in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, will deregister Iranian oil tankers flying its flag to dodge sanctions.
