The 16-story, Beaux-Arts-style Knickerbocker Hotel opened in NYC at Broadway and 42nd. It was financed by Jacob Astor. The hotel closed in 1921 and was converted to apartments and textile showrooms. In the 1950s it was converted to an office tower. In 2006 it was purchased by Istithmar Hotels, an investment arm of Dubai’s royal family, with plans to restore it as a luxury hotel. Gulf Air, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar, decided to cut back its services to Dubai. This prompted Dubai to launch its own airline. The Emirates Airline began in the UAE with 2 rented planes and a $10 million investment from Dubai’s ruling family under the direction of Maurice Flanagan. In 2005 the state-owned operation planned to double its 73-plane fleet. Sir Tim Clark helped set up the airline and by 2015 it was the world’s biggest carrier as measured by int’l. passenger mileage. In Nepal 5 Sikh men, members of the Kashmir Harakut ul-Mujahedin, hijacked an Indian Airlines A-300 Airbus with 189 people onboard. After 3 stops for refueling it landed in Kandahar, Afghanistan, where it was surrounded by Taliban militia. 26 passengers were released in Dubai. They called for the release of Maulana Massood Azhar, a Pakistani religious leader and other Kashmiri militants. They later raised their demands to $200 million, the release of 35 jailed guerrillas and the exhumation of a dead comrade buried in India. Israel announced the kidnapping by Hizbullah of Elchanan Tannenbaum (b.1946), a colonel in Israel’s reserves. He was kidnapped in Dubai and taken to Lebanon. Tannenbaum was released in January 2004 as part of a prisoner swap with Hezbollah. The swap exchanged 435 prisoners held by Israel in return for Tannenbaum's release and the return of the bodies of 3 soldiers killed during an ambush along the Israeli-Lebanese border.
