NASA's Osiris-Rex spacecraft descended to the Bennu asteroid and, dodging boulders the size of buildings, momentarily touched the surface to collect a handful of cosmic rubble for return to Earth. On Oct. 23 scientists said the spacecraft was stuffed with so much asteroid rubble from this week’s grab that it’s lid was jammed open and precious particles were drifting away in space.

A space rock originally designated 2004 MN4 and renamed 99942 Apophis, was expected to come within 22,600 miles of Earth. A right kind of gravity boost could then put it on track to hit Earth in 2036. In 2005 two NASA astronauts suggested that a spacecraft hovering near the asteroid for an extended period could cause a major orbital change and avoid impact.
