Jan Zwartendijk, a Dutch diplomat, and Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat, worked together to save some 2,000 thousand Polish Jews, who had fled to Lithuania by issuing them visas for Japan, China and the Dutch colonies in South America. Zwartendijk wrote out the so called Curacao visas, while Sugihara issued the transit visas weeks after the Red Army entered the Baltic state. The Sugihara family was later captured by the Russians and placed in a concentration camp for 1½ years. None of the refugees actually arrived in Curacao, but many of them reached free countries or ended up in Shanghai where they survived the war.
