British navigator, Captain James Cook, British astronomer Charles Green and Swedish naturalist Daniel Solander observed and recorded a transit of Venus across the sun on the island of Tahiti during Cook's first voyage around the world.

1971
Australia joined with New Zealand and 14 independent of self-governing island nations to form the South Pacific Forum. The name was changed in 2000 to Pacific Islands Forum. Member states include: Australia, the Cook Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. Since 2006, associate members territories are New Caledonia and French Polynesia. In 2011 Guam, the Northern Marianas and American Samoa became associate members.

1981
Sir Albert Henry (b.1907), the first prime minister of the Cook Islands (1965-1978), died. He had been stripped of his knighthood by Queen Elizabeth when it was learned that he had used government funds to pay for charter flights home for expatriate voters friendly to his party.

The 16-member Pacific Islands Forum (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, the Cook Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Marshall Islands, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu) planned to create a region-wide aviation market aimed at encouraging tourism.

Pacific Island nations imposed a series of measures aimed at halting overfishing. 8 of 17 members of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission agreed on the measures In December the 9 remaining members joined in imposing a conservation agenda on 20 million square miles to take effect on January 1, 2010. The 17 members included Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.

China’s Vice Premier Wang Yang said China will provide a concessionary loan of up to $1 billion to Pacific island nations to support construction projects in a part of the world where Beijing and Taiwan compete for influence. He made the announcement at a forum with Pacific island nations in Guangzhou at a meeting attended by representatives from Micronesia, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Niue and Fiji.

New Zealand’s PM John Key said his country will fund a multi-million dollar program aimed at getting more children in Pacific island countries to play sport. The NZ$10 million (US$7.3 million), five-year initiative will initially focus on rugby and netball in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands.

Jacqueline Evans of the Cook Islands was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize. Her work led to the conservation and sustainable management of all 763,000 square miles (1.98 million square km) of the Cook Islands' ocean territory and creation of 15 marine protected areas.

Cook Islands PM Mark Brown said the community is readying for its first coronavirus infections after an infected traveler visited. The small South Pacific nation had not experienced COVID-19 to date. Official data showed that 99.6% of the island nation's roughly 17,000 people aged 12 and over is double-vaccinated, and 70% of those eligible have had their booster shots.
