The British colonized the Andaman Islands home to 10 tribes of the Great Andamanese comprising some 5,000 people. Most were killed or died of diseases brought by the colonizers. Indian police officer Vijay Singh said seven fishermen have been arrested for facilitating a visit by American John Allen Chau to North Sentinel Island, where he was apparently killed. North Sentinel is in the Andaman Islands, a group of islands at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Chau had reached the vicinity of the island on Nov. 16, before transferring to a canoe. His body was spotted the following day by the fishermen on their return. Links: USA, India, Murder, Andaman |
