In Uganda the Holy Spirit Mobile Forces (HSMF), a Christian fundamentalist revolt, began under the leadership of Alice Lakwena (1956-2007). The movement was crushed by the army and Lakwena fled to Kenya where she was imprisoned in 1987.

30-year-old Laurie Dann walked into a Winnetka, Ill., elementary school classroom, where she shot to death 8-year-old Nicholas Corwin and wounded several other children. After wounding a young man at his home, Dann took her own life.

Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was convicted of battery for slapping a Beverly Hills police officer who had pulled over her Rolls-Royce for expired license plates. As part of her sentence, Gabor served three days in jail.

In the Netherlands Lucia de Berk murdered 7 people in her care by giving them lethal doses of drugs. In 2004 a court sentenced her to life in jail and compulsory psychiatric treatment for killing. A high court ordered a review, ruling that the woman could not be sentenced to both life in jail and psychiatric care. In 2006 de Berk was sentenced to life in prison.

Andrea Yates (36) of Houston, Texas, drowned her 5 children, ages 6 months to 7 years, at her home near the Johnson Space Center. Yates had been under medication for post-partum depression. In 2002 a jury found Yates guilty of capital murder and sentenced her to life in prison. Her conviction was overturned in 2005 by an appeals court which ruled a prosecution expert witness gave false testimony at her trial. In 2006 a jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity.

A Houston jury spared Andrea Yates’ life after prosecutors stopped short of demanding the death penalty for the tormented mother who’d drowned her five children in the bathtub. Yates was sentenced to life in prison; however, she was later acquitted by reason of insanity in a retrial.

In Tyler, Texas, Deanna LaJune Laney (38) bludgeoned to death her 2 sons Joshua (8) and Luke (6). A toddler was in critical condition. In 2004 a jury found Laney legally insane.

Laura Medina (21) repeatedly rammed her car into another vehicle in which her boyfriend rode with a new girlfriend. A crash resulted in Castro Valley that killed Michelle Dickerson (18) of Manteca. In 2007 Medina was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

2005 Jan 6
Andrea Yates' murder conviction for drowning her children in the bathtub on June 20, 2001, was overturned by a Texas appeals court. On July 26, 2006, after three days of deliberations, Yates was found not guilty by reason of insanity, as defined by the state of Texas.

In Taize, France, Brother Roger, the 90-year-old founder of an ecumenical religious community dedicated to peace and reconciliation, was knifed to death by an apparently deranged Romanian woman at an evening prayer service attended by 2,500 people. Brother Roger founded the Taize religious community in 1940 emphasizing the need for all Christians to come together in peace, love and reconciliation.

Lashaun Harris (23) threw her 3 children into San Francisco Bay near Fishermen's Wharf. The body of a third sibling was recovered. Harris had been staying with her children at a Salvation Army shelter in Oakland. She told authorities that voices had told her to throw her children into the water. In 2007 a judge ruled that Harris was not guilty by reason of insanity. A jury had convicted her of assault and second-degree murder.

A Mexican judge committed 8 relatives to the psychiatric ward of a prison for the ritualistic slayings of two young family members that shocked Mexico with their brutality. Officials said the parents, grandparents and aunts of a 7-month-old and 13-year-old hacked a baby to death and fatally stoned a teenager earlier this month after they became convinced the girls were demons or possessed by the devil.

In Oaxaca, Mexico, about 500 women banging spoons against pots and pans seized a state-run television station and broadcast a homemade video that showed police kicking protesters out of Oaxaca's main square last month. In southern Monte Orden village heavy rains caused a mountainside to give way, burying 2 homes and killing 11 people, 4 of them children.

Raijon Daniels (8) died in Richmond, Ca. His mother, Teresa Marie Moses (23), was arrested on felony charges of torture and child endangerment after the child’s body was found to be covered with chemical and rope burns, sores and other injuries all over his body. In 2009 a judge ruled that Moses was not guilty by reason of insanity.

In SF Mia Sagote (30) and Leslie Siliga (29) reportedly doused Leslie May (49), a homeless woman from the Tenderloin, with gasoline and burned her alive at Candlestick Point in retaliation for May’s report to police implicating them in a personal robbery. Sagote was convicted of murder, kidnapping and robbery on Oct 20, 2013. On Dec 20, 2013, Sagote was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Alice Lakwena, a Ugandan warrior priestess who led an insurgency in the 1980s, died at a Kenyan refugee camp. She was known as Alice Auma and claimed to have been possessed by a spirit called Lakwena, which gave her spiritual powers to protect her fighters from bullets by anointing them with oil. Her cousin, Joseph Kony, is the messianic leader of the Lord's Resistance Army.

Mary Winkler, who'd killed her preacher husband with a shotgun blast to the back as he lay in bed, was sentenced in Selmer, Tenn., to three years in prison. She ended up serving 67 days in custody, 12 in jail and the rest in a mental health facility.

Deputies in Big Creek, West Virginia, found Megan Williams (20), who was sexually abused, beaten and stabbed while held captive for at least a week. She was repeatedly called a racial slur during the attacks in Big Creek, about 35 miles southwest of Charleston. Six people, all white, including a mother and son and a mother and daughter, were arrested in connection with the alleged abduction of the black woman. The suspects pleaded guilty and were sent to prison. In 2009 Williams, while living in Ohio, said she had lied about the abuse in 2007 in order to get back at her boyfriend, who had beaten her.

In Mexico Juana Barraza (50), a former female wrestler who terrorized Mexico City as the "Little Old Lady Killer," was sentenced to 759 years in jail for killing 16 elderly women.

2009 Aug 15
In Kuwait a fire at a wedding tent killed 57 women and children as it consumed the structure in a blazing inferno lasting just three minutes. The bridegroom’s ex-wife was later found to be the arsonist. In 2010 a Kuwaiti appeals court confirmed a death sentence against Nasra Yussef Mohammed al-Enezi (23). She had been convicted in March of setting fire to the wedding tent as her husband took a second wife. Al-Enezi was among seven people hanged on January 25, 2017.

At the Vatican a woman jumped a barrier and rushed at Pope Benedict XVI (82) for the second time in two years, managing to knock him down before being pulled away by security. The Vatican identified the woman involved as Susanna Maiolo (25), a Swiss-Italian national with psychiatric problems, who was immediately taken to a clinic for treatment. The pope was unhurt but retired Vatican diplomat, French Cardinal Roger Etchegaray (87), fractured his hip in the commotion.

In Pennsylvania Andrea Curry-Demus (40) was found to be mentally ill but guilty of 2nd degree murder and kidnapping for luring a pregnant teenager to her apartment, cutting out the baby and killing the mother. The infant, now 18 months old, was living with relatives.

In Puerto Rico Coraly Campos feuded with her partner and told him he would never see the two children again. She then beat them, stabbed them with a kitchen knife and set the house afire. Her 3-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son died in the attack in the city of Trujillo Alto. Campos also tried to kill herself. On March 11, 2011, Campos (21) was convicted of first-degree murder, child abuse, arson, domestic abuse and violation of weapons laws.

In India school principal Rupan Pathak fatally stabbed Raj Kishore Kesri (51), a Hindu nationalist lawmaker, while he was meeting with some of his supporters at his residence in eastern Bihar state. Pathak accused Kesri of sexually harassing her over a three-year period. Kesri's guards overpowered Pathak, who is in her early 40s, and beat her up.

In Tampa, Florida, Julie Powers Schenecker (50) shot her son (13) in the head as she drove him to soccer practice. She then returned home and shot her daughter (16) in the face. Both kids were killed with a .38-caliber pistol purchased a few days earlier. On May 16, 2014, she was convicte3d and sentenced to two life terms in prison.

In London Mary Konye (22) disguised herself with a veil and attacked Naomi Oni (22), leaving her with disfiguring burns on her face, a hand and a thigh. On March 21, 2014, Konye was sentenced to 12 years in jail for throwing acid on her friend's face following an argument.

A California jury in Santa Ana convicted Catherine Kieu (50) of torture and aggravated mayhem. She was accused of drugging her husband (60) and then severing his penis and tossing it into the garbage disposal. She was jealous of his plans to divorce her because he was seeing his ex-girlfriend. On June 28 she was sentenced to life in prison.

In Texas Alf Stefan Andersson (59), a University of Houston professor and researcher, was stabbed to death. His girlfriend Ana Trujillo (45) was later accused of stabbing Andersson in the face at least 25 times with a platform pump stiletto heel. On April 8, 2014, a jury found Trujillo guilty. On April 11 Trujillo was sentenced to life in prison.

In Mexico a woman approached a bus driver in Ciudad Juarez, took out a pistol, shot him in the head and got off. The next day, apparently the same woman did exactly the same thing to another driver on the same route. The woman was thought to be seeking revenge for purported sexual abuse of female passengers.

In Washington DC a dramatic car chase through the streets near the White House to the US Capitol ended in gunfire when law enforcement officers shot and killed the driver as lawmakers and aides huddled in a lockdown. The car involved in the chase was registered to Miriam Carey (34) of Connecticut. A one-year-old girl in the car was unhurt.

In Arizona police found Aniarael Macias (13) dead at the home of Connie Villa (35) in Casa Grande. Villa had tried to poison her three other children and had just stabbed her ex-husband who called 911 as he drove to a hospital. Connie Villa was arrested on Dec 29 after being released from a hospital.

Chinese state media reported that kindergarten headmaster Shi Haixia and a man were sentenced to death in a poisoning case that left two girls dead. Haixia was upset that a rival school had better enrollments and injected rat poison into a bottle of yogurt. She then asked her accomplice to place it on the road in late April 2013, with a notebook and a pencil in a plastic bag on the way to the other kindergarten in Pingshan County, Hebei province.

In Utah Megan Huntsman (39) was arrested after police reported tiny bodies stuffed into separate cardboard boxes in the garage of her former home in Pleasant Grove. She had 7 babies between 1996 and 2006. Estranged husband Darren West discovered the bodies a day earlier while cleaning out the garage. On April 28 she was charged with 6 counts of 1st degree murder. On April 20, 2015, Huntsman was sentenced to at least 30 years in prison.

In Spain Isabel Carrasco (b.1955), a local bigwig in the People’s Party of PM Mariano Rajoy, was shot dead by the mother of a young woman who had been let go from her government job.

In southern California CHP Officer Daniel Andrew stopped, stradded and pummeled Marlene Pinnock (51) at the 10 Freeway La Brea Avenue exit. The woman had been walking barefoot along the freeway. A video of the incident was posted on YouTube causing widespread outrage. On Sep 24 Los Angeles agreed pay Pinnock $1.5 million and officer Andrew agreed to resign.
