From Indonesia it was reported that machete-wielding gangs have killed at least 153 people in Banyuwangi in recent months. The dead were accused of dabbling in black magic and denounced as evil sorcerers. The killings were reported to be spreading to the neighboring districts of Jember, Pasuruan, Situbondo, and the island of Madura.

Phantarak Rajadej (104), a former police chief in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, died. He had begun making and selling Jatukam Ramathep amulets in the 1980s to raise money for a Buddhist shrine and was believed to have mastered the art of black magic to ward off his enemies. Production of the amulets surged following his death. In 2008 the market collapsed.

Myanmar abolished direct censorship of the media in the most dramatic move yet toward allowing freedom of expression in the long-repressed nation. But related laws and practices that may lead to self-censorship raise doubt about how much will change. With the abolition of the censorship board publications on "wizards" increased dramatically.

His acting credits included the films "The Prestige" (2006), "The Spanish Prisoner" (1997), "Mystery Men" (1999), "Heist" (2001), "Boogie Nights" (1997), "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "House of Games" (1987", and "Magnolia" (1999), as well as the HBO series "Deadwood" (2004-2006).
