Sam Patch (~23), stunt diver, dove 125 feet from a platform at the Genesee Falls on Friday the 13th in Rochester, NY. His body was found the following March in the Genesee River ice. In 2003 Paul E. Johnson authored "Sam Patch, the Famous Jumper."

Evel Knieval (d. Nov 30, 2007) was born as Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel, Jr. He became a US daredevil motorcycle stunt man, showman, entertainer, Member Motorcycle Hall of Fame and Guiness World Record Holder.

1960 Aug 16
American test pilot Joe Kittinger’s history-making parachute jump was from an altitude of 102,800 feet, or 19.3 miles. In a gondola lifted by a 360-foot helium balloon, Kittinger reached the highest altitude ever reached by man in nonpowered flight. His free fall lasted four minutes and 36 seconds and he became the first man to exceed the speed of sound without an aircraft or space vehicle. In 1984 Kittinger became the first to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in a helium balloon alone.

Carl Lewis (Olympic Gold Medallist: 100 meter & 200 meter sprints, long jump & 4x100 meter relay [1984]; 100 meter in 9.93 seconds, a world record, long jump, 4x100 meter relay [1988], long jump and 4x100 relay [1992]; Olympic Hall of Famer; AP Male Athlete of the Year [1983, 1984]), was born.

1966
Brian Lee Schubert (1940-2006) and a friend became the first people to parachute from El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Schubert was killed in 2006 when his chute opened late at a jump festival in Fayetteville, West Virginia.

1968 Oct 18
The US Olympic Committee suspended two black athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, for giving a black power salute as a protest during a victory ceremony in Mexico City. Bob Beamon soared 29 feet, 2 inches, to set a world record in the long jump. In 1976 Dick Schaap authored “The Perfect Jump.”

1977 Dec 22
Thomas Helms (26) climbed to the edge of the observation deck on the eighty-sixth floor of the Empire State Building, and jumped intending to kill himself on the streets 1000s of feet below. He only fell twenty feet before landing on a narrow ledge on the 85th floor. Helms suffered no major injuries but was knocked unconscious for half-an-hour--adequate time for an emergency crew to bring him safely inside.

1980 Nov 8
In West Virginia Bridge Day began when parachutists began jumping from the 876-foot New River Gorge Bridge over the New River. It became annual and was scheduled on the 3rd Saturday of October. The New River is second oldest river in the world. Only the Nile is older. It is also one of only two rivers in the world which flows south to north.

Robbie Knievel (37) jumped a 200-foot-wide chasm over the Grand Canyon with his motorcycle. His old world record was 223 feet.

Thor Alex Kappfjell (32) was killed during a miscalculated jump in Norway. He had earlier parachuted from the World Trade Center, Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building in NYC, after which he pleaded guilty to 3 counts of reckless endangerment and was sentenced to 7 days of community service.

In California Jan Davis (60), co-owner of an aerial photography business in Santa Barbara, plunged to her death during a skydiving stunt from El Capitan in Yosemite. The stunt was to protest the banning of sport parachuting from cliffs in national parks.

2005 Aug 26
An Iranian daredevil died while attempting to break the world record for jumping over buses on a motorcycle. Javad Palizbanian (44) was trying to leap over 22 buses parked side-by-side when his motorbike came down on the 13th bus.

In Belgium Els Van Doren (38) smashed into a back garden from some 4,500 meters because both her main and reserve parachutes failed to open after she jumped from a plane with Els Clottemans (26), their lover, Dutchman Marcel Somers, and another man. In 2010 Els Clottemans went on trial charged with the murder of her fellow skydiver and love rival. She was convicted and jailed for 30 years for killing her rival.

In Malaysia Kylie Tanti Marion (42), an Australian woman, fell to her death when her parachute failed to open after she jumped off the Alor Setar Tower to practice for the KL Tower International Jump on Oct. 7.
