Russian anarcho-communist Peter Kropotkin authored "The Conquest of Bread". Originally written in French, it first appeared as a series of articles in the anarchist journal Le Révolté. It was first published in Paris with a preface by Élisée Reclus, who also suggested the title. Auguste Vaillant (b.1861) threw a nail bomb from the second row of the public gallery in the Palais Bourbon into the chamber: 20 deputies were slightly injured. A symbolic gesture, meant to wound rather than kill, Vaillant was condemned to death, and guillotined February 5 1894. The deputies use the event to suppress the anarchist press. Theodore Roosevelt, former president and the Bull Moose Party candidate, was shot at close range by anarchist William Schrenk while greeting the public in front of the Hotel Gilpatrick in Milwaukee while campaigning for the presidency. He was saved by the papers in his breast pocket and still managed to give a 90 minute address in Milwaukee after requesting his audience to be quiet because “there is a bullet in my body.” Schrenk was captured and uttered the now famous words "any man looking for a third term ought to be shot." In Canada on the opening day of Olympic competition Vancouver police in riot gear confronted more than 200 masked protesters who hurled newspaper boxes through display windows of a popular department store selling Olympic souvenirs. Guillame Joseph-Marc Beaulieu (27) led a group of about 100 black-masked anarchists who spray-painted vehicles and smashed storefront windows as they marched. On Feb 16 police reported his arrest. Beaulieu, charged with mischief, had also led a group that blocked a street and forced organizers to re-route a relay transporting the Olympic flame to the opening ceremonies. In southeast Georgia 4 Army soldiers based at Fort Stewart killed Michael Roark (19), a former comrade, and his girlfriend, Tiffany York (17), to protect an anarchist militia group they formed that stockpiled assault weapons and plotted a range of anti-government attacks. On Aug 27, 2012, Pfc. Michael Burnett (26) gave testimony and pleaded guilty to manslaughter, illegal gang activity and other charges. In Ohio 5 people, claiming to be anarchists, were arrested in Cleveland for trying to blow up a four-lane bridge across the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The explosive devices were inoperable and controlled by an undercover FBI agent. On Sep 5 three of the men admitted their roles in the bomb scheme in a move to avoid life in prison.
