Thaddeus Cahill (1867-1934) patented (pat no. 580,035) what was to become the "Telharmonium" or "Dynamophone." It can be considered the first significant electronic musical instrument. Leon Theremin invented the theremin musical instrument. He was a Russian inventor who invented the instrument made of vacuum tubes and oscillators in the 1920s in New York. He was later abducted by operators of Stalin and taken back to Moscow where he is forced to work on devices for the Soviet Ministry of Internal Affairs. It was an early electronic instrument with an eerie, sliding tone. The 1994 film "Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey," featured the instrument. Clara Rockmore (d.1998 at 88), born Clara Reisenberg in Vilnius, became a theremin virtuoso, and was the focus of the 1998 video documentary: "Clara Rockmore, The Greatest Theremin Virtuoso." RCA chairman David Sarnoff announced the Mark I music synthesizer. Harry Olson and Belar, both working for RCA, invented the Electronic Music Synthesizer (aka the Olson-Belar Sound Synthesizer). This synth used sawtooth waves that were filtered for other types of timbres. It is rumored to have been built for the artificial creation of human speech. Links: Inventor, Music Instr.
