Nazi murders took place in Marzabotto, Italy, under SS-major Reder. Retreating Nazi troops killed some 1,000 women, children and elderly while allegedly pursuing resistance fighters. In 2002 German Pres. Rau apologized for the massacre. In 2007 an Italian military tribunal gave life sentences in absentia to 10 German former SS men for massacring about 800 Italian villagers. They had laid waste to the villages of Marzabotto, Grizzana and Vado di Monzuno near Bologna, as the Germans retreated before Allied troops. Links: Italy, Germany, Military Amuck

In Vietnam, the Tiger Force, an elite US Army unit of the 101st Airborne Division, achieved their 327th kill. The unit had killed hundreds of civilians in Hanh Thien, a Central Highland area, over the last seven months. US Army Lt. Col. Gerald Morse had called for 327 kills to match the name of the 327th infantry regiment. In 2006 Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss authored “Tiger Force: A True Story of Men and War.” It was based on secret documents from Henry Tufts (d.2002), former head of the Army’s Criminal Investigations Command (CID). Army Capt. Lawrence Rockwood was convicted at his court-martial in Fort Drum, N.Y., of conducting an unauthorized investigation of reported human rights abuses at a Haitian prison. Rockwood was dismissed from the military the next day. Links: Haiti, USA, New York, Sociology, Military Amuck
