1985
The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was founded in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with the aim of promoting economic cooperation and alleviating poverty in South Asia. Members included Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

In Bangladesh Indian PM Manmohan Singh told the closing session of the 13th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit that Afghanistan is to join SAARC.

2016 May 11
India's government said South Asian nations will set up a toll-free helpline and online platform to fight human trafficking, and trace the thousands of children who go missing in the region annually. Ministers from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Nepal came to the agreement after a conference on child protection held under the auspices of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
