Garibaldi asked San Marino for asylum from Austrian forces. San Marino brokered for Garibaldi’s surrender to Austrian forces. Garibaldi and his wife escaped, and made their way to Ravenna. Anita Garibaldi died enroute. Garibaldi managed to reach safety in the Kingdom of Sardinia.

San Marino banned abortion in any circumstance. In 2021 its citizens voted in a referendum calling for abortion to be made legal in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

The 47th session of the UN General Assembly welcomed eight former Soviet republics and San Marino as its newest members. Kazakhstan’s Pres. Nursultan Nazarbayev proposed to the UN General Assembly an annual reduction of military budgets by 1% and using the money to fund and strengthen UN peace projects.
