Eight Inuit from Canada’s north-eastern coast agreed to travel to Europe to be exhibits in a human zoo. They soon died from smallpox. In recognition of Inuit land claims, 770,000 sq. mls. of the Canadian Northwest Territories' Central Keewatin and Baffin Region became Nunavut Territory. In Greenland Premier Hans Enoksen, head of the social democratic Siumut party, struck a deal with the island's liberal Atassut party. 2 days earlier Enoksen evicted the left-wing Inuit Ataqatigitt party, leaving the Arctic island of 56,000 without a government.
