The sultan of Sulu leased Sabah in perpetuity to the British North Borneo Company. In 1946 the company ceded control of the oil-rich Sabah to Britain. Malaysia took over the arrangement after independence from Britain, annually paying a token sum to the heirs, who are Philippine nationals. Payments were stopped in 2013, with Malaysia arguing that no one else had a right over Sabah. In 2022 The heirs of the sultanate sought to seize Malaysian government assets around the world in a bid to enforce a $14.9 billion award they won in a French arbitration court. The Federation of Malaysia was formally established. Sabak (Sabah) and Sarawak, Britain’s colonies on Borneo, joined the Malayan peninsula to form Malaysia with Tunku Abdul Rahman (60) as prime minister. The federation formed under bitter opposition from Indonesia, which refused to recognize the country and waged a guerrilla war against it.
