After a charity concert organized by a group of aristocratic women, Joseph von Sonnleitner, Secretary of the court Theater, founded a Society for the Friends of Music of the Austrian Imperial State. This led to the establishment of a school for voice and a conservatory.

Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxhiu (d.1997), later known as Mother Teresa and care-taker of the poor in Calcutta, was born to an ethnic Albanian family in Uskub (later Skopje, Macedonia). In 1950 she founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta and in 1979 was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for her work.

In Ethiopia the Lions Club charity sponsored a free surgical program at the Adama hospital in Nazareth town. Over 700 cataract patients were treated. Some had been blind for 20 years.

In Croatia a 2nd clerk revealed that Pres. Franco Tudjman’s wife, Ankica Tudjman, had deposited nearly $300,000 into her bank account over the last 2 years. Robert Horvat and Ankica Lepej were to be indicted for violating bank secrecy laws. Mrs. Tudjman was a pensioner who ran a children’s charity.

It was reported that video footage was smuggled out to Kenya from the Ituri district of Congo by the Christoffel Blinden Mission, a Christian charity for the blind. It depicted the escalating tribal slaughter in the area.

Mimi Farina, folksinger and founder of the Bread and Roses charity, died at age 56. She was the sister of Joan Baez. She and Richard Farina (d.1966), her 1st husband, wrote the song "Pack Up Your Sorrows."

Benevolence International Foundation, an Islamic charity based in suburban Chicago, and its director were charged with perjury and accused by the FBI of supporting ter-rorists; the charity maintains its innocence. Enaam Arnaout later pleaded guilty to racketeering, admitting he had defrauded donors by diverting some of the money to Islamic military groups in Bosnia and Chechnya.

Rome decided to have the coins collected from the Trevi fountain every day and not just on Mondays. The next day Roberto Cercelletta (50), a self-described unemployed Roman resident, self-inflicted razor cuts on his stomach in a protest and asked if the money collected has really gone to the Catholic charity Caritas in past years.

In Honduras crowds at a Christmas toy giveaway at National Stadium surged out of control, and a 7-year-old girl was killed and about 80 other people were injured. Television station, Compania Televisora, has run the charity giveaway for eight years, and many businesses contributed toys to the event.

Honored were: August Czartoryski (1858-1893) of Poland, a prince who became a Salesian priest; Laura Montoya (1874-1949) of Colombia, who founded the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Mary; Maria Guadalupe Garcia Zavala (1878-1963) of Mexico, co-founder of the Congregation of the Servants of Saint Margaret Mary and the Poor; Nemesia Valle (1847-1916) of Italy, a nun of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Giovanna Antida Thouret; Eusebia Palomino Yenes (1899-1935) of Spain; a nun of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary, Help of Christians; and da Costa (1904-1955), who became a lay Salesian cooperator.
